This course will be taught synchronously. From time to time, however, some class hours may be redirected to asynchronous activities, such as watching filmed productions.

This is an upper-level research course and is aimed at students who are in their 3rd year of study or higher. Students who are in their first or second year of study may register with permission of the instructor (hallie.marshall@ubc.ca).

Why the Classics?
This course will examine questions around why certain plays are studied and/or staged more frequently than others, looking at how dramatic canons are formed and how they shift from time period to time period. We will discuss both the value of having a dramatic canon, but also the problems that literary canons have historically presented in terms of which works and whose voices are included or excluded and which audiences have been privileged.

Term 2 version of THTR 448A. Permission of the Department is required to register in this course. You should only take this course if you have already taken a Term 2 version of THTR 448B.

Theatre and The City: Classical Athens and Elizabethan LondonThe theatre of Dionysus in Athens was located in the heart of the ancient city, on the south slope of the Acropolis. Theatres in Elizabethan London, on the other hand, existed on the periphery. Through a selection of plays and secondary readings, this course will explore the place of these two theatre traditions in their respective cities, exploring their relationship to both the physical and civic space.
