Comics and Graphic Novels in Central, Northern and Eastern Europe

This course focuses on comics produced in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe. We'll spend the first two weeks on the history of the comics medium, especially in the region under study. We'll then read, analyze and discuss both selected excerpts and entire graphic novels by creators from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Russia and the former Yugoslavia. All works will be read in English translation.

Shadows and Screams: Germanic Horror Films from Expressionism to the Present

This course focuses on horror cinema produced in the German-speaking countries. We'll spend the first half of the course looking at German Expressionism and its widespread influence. During the course's second half we'll watch and discuss more recent horror films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. No knowledge of the German language is needed.
