We will examine the roots and development of Modernism and attendant modes of cultural production, including visual art, film, architecture, music, dance, and design, studying influential primary texts by artists, critics, and theorists, and analyzing the ways in which Modernism and Postmodernism have been defined and historicized. The course aims to introduce students to local and global developments in art and to the overlaps and discordances between art groups, schools, movement, theories, and methodologies throughout the 20th and early 21st century.
