The intimate relationship between painting, poetry, and calligraphy, the so-called Three Perfections, is a basic feature in the Chinese artistic tradition and a recurring theme in aesthetic discourse, artistic practice, and in the production and transmission of knowledge in painting and print. This course is an introduction to pre-Modern Chinese painting with a focus on various forms of interaction between word and image in their respective historical and social contexts.
