Photography and Postmodernism - Art and Theory
This seminar facilitates a theoretically informed discussion about the postmodern confluence of photography with the category of art from the 1950s to the present. To put it differently: How has photography become a legitimate branch of advanced art? The seminar's twelve-week program highlights a number of key themes that have characterized the discourse and practice of image-making from the 1950s onwards: multiplicity, difference, theatricality, simulacrum, seriality/sequence, narrativity, and historicity. While investigating the theoretical potency of those notions, the seminar introduces its participants to the possibility of "postmodern photography," the premises of which have yet to be determined.
