"Aesthetic Provocations: Female Artists in Modern and Contemporary Art"This seminar reconsiders canonical art history from a different perspective -- that of a feminist art history. This course focuses on artistic practices and aesthetic provocations of female artists from 1900 to the present, revealing the complexities of their art and their shifting social situations from turn of the century France and Germany to post-World War II New York City and within recent global contexts. Offering critical perspectives on strategies female artists have developed in several media, this seminar engages practices that speak to the ways in which female artists have put pressure on the canon and negotiated the terms and conditions of representation.
