Water and Mountain: What was Chinese Landscape Painting?
Landscape painting has been one of the most highly valued artistic practices in China since the 11th century. Recent scholarship has complicated and refined our understanding of this "genre" and in this seminar we will work through some of the most recent publications to explore the different forms, notions, meanings, and functions of "landscape" during specific historical moments and in different social contexts. Moving beyond stylistic and poetic frames of interpretation, we will focus on the personal and political agendas that have informed the production of landscape painting as well as its reception and theorization.
