What is Europe? Sex, Text and Nation

The course will discuss the question of what constitutes European identity today, in the light of recent developments. We will begin by establishing a theoretical framework for our investigations, then proceed through a series of texts and films from Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Russia. Throughout we will be considering the troubled intersection of national and European identity with claims about sex and gender, ethnicity, culture and religion.
