CNTO 301 Basic Cantonese I

Elementary level (part I) course in Cantonese for non-heritage learners with no prior exposure to or background in Cantonese. Focus on training for basic listening and conversational skills in Cantonese. Heritage speakers of Mandarin are NOT eligible.

This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Credits: 3

Pre-reqs: One of CHIN 107, CHIN 233, CHIN 108, CHIN 234. (Or placement approval.)

The following students are eligible for CNTO301

a. Non-heritage speakers whose Mandarin proficiency level is beyond CHIN 233/234 (107/108).

CNTO301 is a language course which deals with Cantonese. Despite the difference between Cantonese and Mandarin in many aspects, there is significant overlap in terms of vocabulary and sentence structures.

PLACEMENT PROCEDURE: ALL students who wish to take ANY CHIN courses, (CNTO or CLCH 389/399) are required to complete an "On-Line Placement Questionnaire" to obtain a placement approval for registration. Please only register for the course that you have approval for.
