FIST 331 Studies in Film Theory

A seminar introducing the many theoretical approaches to film: formalist, historical, Marxist, psychoanalytic, semiotic, and structuralist.

An introduction to classical and 1970s film theories; students engage with a metaphysics of cinema by closely reading original texts exploring realism, formalism, the Frankfurt school, film language, genre theory, apparatus theory, and suture. Winter Term 1 (September-December) sections will be held online. Classes will include a combination of synchronous (live) and asynchronous activities (such as watching recorded lectures, posting to discussion boards, or completing quizzes). By the start of term, instructors will provide their students with more information on what to expect in their individual sections.
