This course uses a comparative framework in order to examine the ways in which Asian and Australasian cinemas approach the post-human, the ecological, and the animal. From the comedic and fantastic to the cynical and fatalistic, this course analyzes various film genres and authors interested in anthropocentric concerns. We will pair films from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand with film studies texts and other relevant readings.
