(HIST 490 is intended for History majors, History honours students, and students majoring in the history and philosophy of science, but students from other departments may register if they obtain the instructor's permission.) Conscience in the Middle Ages. We explore medieval notions of conscience (conscientia), its nature, authority and power, and the techniques developed to discern and master it in others. Topics include hypocrisy, theatre and acting, torture and ordeal by fire or water, blushing and physiognomy, names, naming and identiy, authorial personae, law and necessity.
