JAPN 422 Classical Japanese I
The grammar, orthography, and literary style of pre-modern Japanese (bungo). It is strongly recommended that students have 12 credits of JAPN, or equivalent, prior to registration. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 422 or JAPN 311.
- NOTE: If this is the first time you take a Japanese course at UBC, CONSULT THE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES for Japanese on the departmental website at www.asia.ubc.ca to find out which course is appropriate for your level before registration. Those who have prior knowledge in Japanese (except those who have studied at a BC high school or BC college) and those whose parent speaks Japanese must take a placement exam/interview before registering for a course. Schedules for the placement exams are also posted on our departmental website as you can go to http://www.asia.ubc.ca/undergraduate/general-information/placement-exams.html for further information. In order for students to advance from one level of classes in one language to the next level in that same language, they must earn at least an average of 60% in the classes in that language at the level immediately below the level into which they wish to advance. This would apply to all the students in our language classes, not just the language majors.
