Music 353 offers a detailed overview of the music of the Renaissance era, covering roughly the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Sacred, secular, vocal, and instrumental repertories will be considered in a range of historical and cultural contexts. While the course will present a broad framework for understanding the music of the era, it will also examine selected compositions in greater depth. The required textbook is Richard Freedman, Music in the Renaissance, with its accompanying anthology. Restricted to BMUS, BA (MUSC), MIN (MUSC) students - year 3 or higher.
