You have probably heard of Zeus, Aphrodite, Jupiter, and Venus of the Greek and Roman mythologies, but what about Odin and Freyja of the north? This course offers an introduction to the gods and myths of the Norse mythology of Viking Age Scandinavia. Through readings, analyses, and discussions of both old and modern versions of the myths the student will learn how to critically read the sources and to account for the complex world of the mythology. The main focus of this course will be on the Norse mythology, but the Vikings and their world will be taken into consideration when they can help explain aspects of the divine world.
