-  In 2020W Term 2 the title of this course will be "YMkai: The Strange & Supernatural in Early Modern Japanese Popular Culture: This course will focus primarily on yMkai in Edo period (1600-1868) popular culture, including ghost stories, illustrations, and plays. Background will be provided through readings from earlier periods. The representation of the supernatural will be contextualized through secondary readings on the historical, social, and religious environments. We will explore the popularity of transformed creatures (bake-mono) in the period and examine the functions they fulfilled. UBC has confirmed that all Asian Studies Term 2 courses will be online. The meeting days and times currently displayed reflect the maximum time that students will be expected to meet synchronously with the instructor. Courses that are meeting for fewer than 3 hours per week will have traditional lectures replaced with asynchronous learning tasks. The overall workload of the course will remain unchanged.
