A seminar introducing the many theoretical approaches to film: formalist, historical, Marxist, psychoanalytic, semiotic, and structuralist.

-  An introduction to classical and 1970s film theories; students engage with a metaphysics of cinema by closely reading original texts exploring realism, formalism, the Frankfurt school, film language, genre theory, apparatus theory, and suture.
