- NOTE: If this is the first time you take a Japanese course at UBC, CONSULT THE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES for Japanese on the departmental website at www.asia.ubc.ca to find out which course is appropriate for your level before registration. Those who have prior knowledge in Japanese (except those who have studied at a BC high school or BC college) and those whose parent speaks Japanese must take a placement exam/interview before registering for a course. Schedules for the placement exams are also posted on our departmental website as you can go to http://asia.ubc.ca/undergraduate/placement-tests/ for further information. In order for students to advance from one level of classes in one language to the next level in that same language, they must earn at least an average of 60% in the classes in that language at the level immediately below the level into which they wish to advance. This would apply to all the students in our language classes, not just the language majors.
