This course examines key issues in the history of modern Japanese art and visual culture; in particular, how experimentation in art and visual culture became a means of refashioning self and community in a period of intense political, social, economic, and environmental change. The material covered spans from the introduction of the fine arts system in Japan in the wake of the Meiji Restoration; to visual art, architecture, and design in the age of zero-growth.
