JAPN 401 Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing II
Continuation of JAPN 301. It is strongly recommended that students plan to complete both JAPN 400 and JAPN 401 within one year. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 401 or JAPN 301.
- NOTE: If this is the first time you take a Japanese course at UBC, CONSULT THE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES for Japanese on the departmental website at www.asia.ubc.ca to find out which course is appropriate for your level before registration. Those who have prior knowledge in Japanese (except those who have studied at a BC high school or BC college) and those whose parent speaks Japanese must take a placement exam/interview before registering for a course. Schedules for the placement exams are also posted on our departmental website as you can go to http://asia.ubc.ca/undergraduate/placement-tests/ for further information. In order for students to advance from one level of classes in one language to the next level in that same language, they must earn at least an average of 60% in the classes in that language at the level immediately below the level into which they wish to advance. This would apply to all the students in our language classes, not just the language majors.

UBC has confirmed that all Asian Studies Term 2 courses will be online. The meeting days and times currently displayed reflect the maximum time that students will be expected to meet synchronously with the instructor. Courses that are meeting for fewer than 3 hours per week will have traditional lectures replaced with asynchronous learning tasks. The overall workload of the course will remain unchanged.
If this course is blocked please sign up for the waitlist section. Students will be placed into the class based off our department priority guidelines. For more information please visit: http://www.asia.ubc.ca/undergraduate/department-wait-lists/ (Is the class blocked even though there are a few seats that are free? This is normal. Please check our website for what this means.)
This course will be delivered in a mix-mode format (2hrs synchronous + 1 hr asynchronous). Students are expected to meet with the instructor synchronously online for the sessions at the above listed days and times. In addition to the synchronous meetings, the remaining course materials will be delivered asynchronously, as outlined on the course syllabus, and students are expected to complete on their own time. The total workload for this 3-credit course remains the same as a normal class that is delivered in-person.

- Registering for this section does not mean you are enrolled in the course, this is a waitlist section. Students will be moved off the waitlist into the course automatically once there is space.
